What is Kaleidoscope?
Kaleidoscope is a month-long, statewide celebration of creativity in later life. Events take place in communities across Utah and are hosted by local partners such as senior centers, libraries, museums, and arts organizations.
This year’s festival begins with a Kick-off Event on Saturday, August 22 (9:00 am–4:30 pm) at the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City. After that, partners host their own events—such as art workshops, music or dance classes, exhibits, performances, or creative gatherings—in their own community, anytime during the festival month.
Why Creative Aging Matters
Creativity doesn’t retire.
Creative aging recognizes that learning, growth, self-expression, and meaningful connection continue throughout our lives. Through art, music, writing, dance, theater, and other creative experiences, older adults can explore new skills, share their stories, build relationships, and remain actively engaged in their communities.
Research shows that creative engagement can have a meaningful impact on healthy aging:
-
Older adults who participate in professionally led arts programs have been shown to experience improved health, greater well-being, and fewer doctor visits.
-
Arts participation helps reduce loneliness and strengthen social connections, both of which are important factors in healthy aging.
-
Creative activities can support cognitive health, lifelong learning, and continued personal growth.
-
Studies suggest that regular participation in arts and cultural activities may even contribute to healthier aging overall.
Creative aging challenges the idea that later life is a time of decline. Instead, it celebrates aging as a time of continued curiosity, purpose, and possibility.
At Kaleidoscope, we believe creativity belongs to everyone, at every age. Whether someone is trying a new art form, discovering a hidden talent, or reconnecting with a lifelong passion, creative experiences help people connect with themselves, their communities, and the world around them.
Because aging isn’t about slowing down. It’s about continuing to create, learn, connect, and thrive.
